FangShi Shuang Ren II Review

Following shortly after its original, the FangShi Shuang Ren V2 made its way into the community; and with the greatness of the first, this cube was still able to exceed expectations.

Even though the Shuang Ren was nearly perfect, it still wasn’t good enough in the eyes of its maker.  FangShi reevaluated their first attempt and saw that some tweaks could be made to improve the overall structure of the cube.  Although some (myself included) could say that the original version was considered the best speed cube so far, it was still refreshing that they continued to make it even better.

Why FangShi thought that they should remake the 3×3 is beyond me, but I’m also not going to complain either.  They are slightly more expensive, but a better choice if you’re going to choose between the two.  As far as looks go, it still holds a distinct style over every other cube that you will see, but that’s what makes this brand stand out.

FangShi Shuang Ren V2 MechanismMechanism

As I’ve said before, there isn’t much difference between the Shuang Ren and the Shuang Ren V2, so I’d be really rehashing the original, but I’ll still give a good description of the newer design.

The mechanism of this cube, like it’s predecessor, is very unusual and goes out of the norm that you would see in most speedcubes.  The plastic is the first noticeable change that you’ll see, as it has a rougher plastic rather than the smooth feel that you’re used to.  However, that does not affect the turns or the feel when you’re solving it.

The Center pieces now have a bigger block on the main part of the two.  It allows a more structured unit when the cube is together.  The Edge pieces have a built in double torpedo piece that holds the corners to the edge pieces and the edge pieces to the center pieces.  The combined effect creates the strongest structure I’ve seen so far.

There are only slight variations that make this cube better, but the results were worth the extra work.

Smooth, no pops, no locks…. There’s nothing bad that you can say about this cube, and there is always something that you will love.  When I had the Shuang Ren in my hands, I knew that I found a good cube; but the Shuang Ren V2 showed me that a few modifications could make something great even greater.

I could very well say that this is the best speedcube that I’ve ever seen and used.  It’s not that it excels in just one thing, but excels in everything with a balance that brings it all together.  If I could say anything bad about this puzzle, it would be that you have to break it in just a little bit to get a smoother ride when you rotate the cube, but it’ doesn’t take long and you’ll barely feel a change.

Is This Cube For You?

If you are a new cuber or a seasoned speedcuber, this is a cube that you want to have in your library.  This cube is my main at the current time and I feel as though it will stay there for quite sometime.  I’ve been surprised at how well this puzzle works and never disappointed with my purchase.

In fact, after owning several other speedcubes, I’d say that this beats every other one that I own (including the infamous Dayan ZhanChi).  It feels full and thick when you hold it.  You can tell that there is some solid work when you turn the cube and hold it.  I also notice that it sets me up better when I’m cutting corners more than other cubes.

The only thing that you may have to deal with is the breaking in part.  After you solve it several times, you’ll notice a change in the rotation, and that is okay.  It only improves the cube and gives you a great feeling.

Get this cube if you prefer:

  • Smooth turning
  • Flush feeling
  • Heavier weight
  • Superb corner-cutting

Don’t get this cube if you prefer:

  • Crisp turning
  • Open feeling
  • Lighter weight
  • Rigid turns
