Product Description

The ShiShuang is the first attempt of a 2×2 by Fangshi, and it was created shortly after they successfully created a 3×3 that was considered to be one of the greatest speedcubes ever invented.  Many people were impressed at the new speedcube, so they were glad to hear that FangShi was coming out with a new puzzle designed specifically for the 2×2.

The ShiShuang comes in two different sizes.  The larger one sits at 55mm while the other is slightly smaller at 50mm.  This is so that cubers can have a little more say in their style and how they like to solve.  Out of the two, the 50mm is more popular among the community.  The ShiShuang came out not too long after the Dayan 2×2, so they were both competing to be the best 2×2 on the market.  In the end, it’s all about preference.

The internal mechanism of this cube is quite a surprise with its complex design.  They changed several common ideas that most companies would have kept in creating their own 2×2, but that’s FangShi for you.

They added several components that are not connected to the corner pieces as a normal cube would entail.  They added the internal parts that would give the 2×2 an external ball core (if that makes any sense).  In doing so, there is no chance but by sheer force that would cause this cube to pop or even break.  The latter would probably happen before the first with the way this puzzle was made.

Now don’t think that this is a walk in the park for a DIY.  It took me over an hour to get this thing together, and even then I wasn’t sure if I had done it right.  If you’re going to get one of these, consider the idea of getting it preassembled.

The FangShi ShiShuang is a good cube, but I don’t know if I would say that it’s great.  It is good, and that I can assure you, but I have found better.  It feels a little big in my hands, but I also did get the 55mm.  I’ve tried adjusting the tensions on the cube, but it borderlines between being too strict to locking up too much.  I’ve found a balance, but it still doesn’t impress me.

It’s a cube that I do enjoy, and I still have it right up there with my other great 2×2’s, but it’s not my favorite.  I prefer looser cubes that give my hand a little breathing room when I’m solving, and this is the opposite of that.  FangShi did a good job by creating a cube that doesn’t pop, but where they did a good job in one area, they didn’t focus on the areas that I would’ve liked.  That’s just me.

Is This Cube For You?

If you like tight, no popping 2×2’s, then this is perfect for you.  Looser cubes more your style?  Then you may want to pass and go for a different style.

Get this cube if you prefer:

  • Crisp
  • Tight
  • No popping

Don’t get this cube if you prefer:

  • Looser
  • Better corner cutting
